If you've searched "ghost number plates" recently, you've probably come across a mix of alarming news articles and premium plate styles sitting side by side in the results. It's confusing — and that confusion is worth addressing head on, because the term "ghost plates" is being used to describe two completely different things.
The two meanings of "ghost plates"
1. Illegal camera-evasion plates
This is what the recent media coverage has been about. These are plates made using special reflective or treated materials, specifically designed to confuse or evade ANPR cameras used by police and traffic enforcement systems. They are illegal, full stop. Driving with plates designed to avoid camera detection is a serious offence and has nothing to do with legitimate number plate suppliers.
2. Ghost as a plate style
This is what Paramount Plates — and other reputable suppliers — sell under the name Ghost. Our Ghost plates are a premium aesthetic finish. A refined, subtle tonal effect that gives your plate a distinctive look while remaining fully road legal, fully camera-readable, and fully BS AU 145e compliant.
These two things share a name and nothing else.
What are Paramount Plates Ghost plates?
Our Ghost plates are 4D raised plates with a carefully designed finish that creates a clean, stealth-style look. Every plate we produce under the Ghost name:
- Meets BS AU 145e — the current British Standard for road legal number plates
- Uses the correct Charles Wright font with correct character sizing and spacing
- Is fully readable by ANPR cameras, including those using infrared technology
- Carries all required manufacturer markings
- Is produced by a DVLA-registered supplier
There is nothing about our Ghost plates designed to evade cameras, confuse law enforcement, or circumvent any regulation. They are a style choice — nothing more.
Why has there been so much confusion?
Several national news outlets published articles conflating the illegal camera-evasion plates with legitimate 3D and 4D plate styles — including Ghost plates sold by reputable suppliers. The reporting was inaccurate and damaging to an industry that, in the vast majority of cases, operates legally and responsibly.
The reality is simple: 3D and 4D plate styles — including Ghost — are popular because they look premium. They are not designed to evade anything. Lumping them in with genuinely illegal plates is lazy journalism that misleads consumers and damages legitimate businesses.
Will ghost plates pass an MOT?
Yes — our Ghost plates will pass an MOT without issue. MOT testers check that your registration is clearly readable, the plate is secure, and the plate is undamaged. A properly manufactured Ghost plate meets all of these requirements.
What should you watch out for?
The issue isn't ghost plates as a style — it's where you buy them. Some cheaper suppliers produce plates where the characters aren't sufficiently visible, or where materials don't meet BS AU 145e reflectivity standards. Those plates can fail an MOT and attract police attention regardless of what style they are.
Always buy from a DVLA-registered supplier who explicitly confirms BS AU 145e compliance. If a supplier can't confirm that, don't buy from them.
And if anyone ever tries to sell you plates by telling you they can't be picked up by cameras — walk away immediately. That product is illegal and the consequences of using it are serious.
