Valid Documents.

To legally produce your number plates we're required to verify your identity and entitlement to the registration. Here's everything you need to know about which documents we accept.

The ID document you submit does not need to match the name on the entitlement document. This allows number plates to be purchased as gifts — for example, you can provide your own ID while the entitlement is in someone else's name.
Step 1
Proof of Identity
A document confirming who you are, dated within the last 6 months.
  • Utility bill (Gas, Electric, Water)
  • Telephone or Internet bill
  • Bank statement
  • Council Tax bill or rates bill
  • Driving Licence (photocard or paper counterpart)
  • National Identity Card
Step 2
Proof of Registration Entitlement
A document proving your entitlement to the vehicle registration.
  • Vehicle registration certificate (V5C or V5CNI)
  • New keeper supplement (V5C/2 or V5C/2NI)
  • Certificate of entitlement (V750 or V750NI)
  • Retention document (V778)
  • Vehicle tax or SORN renewal reminder (V11 or V11NI)
  • Temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI)
  • Number plate authorisation certificate with DVLA or DVSA stamp (V948)
  • eV948 Certificate of Authorisation — digital alternative, no posting required

Make sure it's sharp
A blurry photo is the most common reason we have to ask for a resubmit. Take a second look before sending — every number and letter needs to be readable.
Get the whole document in shot
Step back a little so all four corners are visible. If any part of the document is cut off we can't accept it.
Colour only please
We need to see the document in colour — black and white photos or photocopies aren't accepted, even if the text is readable.
Watch out for glare
Lay the document flat on a table and use natural light if you can. Flash tends to wash out the text — turn it off if your phone gives you the option.
Driving licence
Just the front is fine — everything we need is on there.
V5C logbook
Send us the front page as a minimum. The document reference number at the top needs to be clearly visible.
If anything looks unclear, covered, or tampered with we'll have to ask you to send it again — which holds up your order. It only takes a minute to check before you submit.
