If you've been looking at premium number plates, you've almost certainly come across the term "4D." It's one of the most searched terms in the number plate industry — but what does it actually mean, how are they made, and are they road legal? Here's everything you need to know.
What does 4D mean?
Despite what the name might suggest, 4D doesn't refer to a fourth physical dimension. It's an industry term for number plates with laser-cut acrylic characters bonded onto the plate surface, creating a raised effect. The name is illogical if you think about it too hard — but it's the industry standard now, so here we are. What matters is what they actually look like, and they look great.
How are 4D plates made?
Each character is precision laser-cut from solid acrylic sheet, then bonded to the plate using industrial-strength 3M adhesive. The result is a sharp, flat-topped raised character with a bold profile that catches light cleanly. Unlike standard printed plates where the letters are simply printed onto the reflective background, 4D plates add genuine physical depth — and that difference is immediately obvious when you see them in person.
Which depth should you choose?
We offer 4D acrylic in two depths:
- 3mm — a bold raised finish that's popular across all vehicle types. Clean, sharp and distinctive without being excessive.
- 5mm — extra depth for maximum visual impact. The deeper profile casts a stronger shadow and makes a bigger statement, particularly on darker vehicles.
We also offer 4D Gel — our best selling style — which combines laser-cut acrylic characters with a domed resin overlay for the ultimate combination of depth and gloss finish.
Will the letters fall off?
We use industrial-strength 3M adhesive to bond every character to the plate — the same adhesive trusted across automotive and manufacturing applications. We've yet to have a customer report letters coming loose. Provided the plates are correctly fitted and not subjected to physical impact, the bond is built to last the lifetime of the plate.
Can I pressure wash 4D plates?
Yes. Our 4D plates are pressure washer safe. You can clean between the characters with your regular wash products — a microfibre or lambswool mitt works well — without any risk of damage to the letters or the plate surface.
Are 4D number plates road legal?
Yes — 4D acrylic plates are fully road legal in the UK. The DVLA has confirmed that raised characters are compliant with UK regulations, provided the plate meets BS AU 145e standards. Every 4D plate we produce uses the correct Charles Wright font, correct character sizing and spacing, and carries all required manufacturer markings. They are road legal and MOT ready.
What about tinted 4D plates?
We don't produce tinted plates — not because we wouldn't want to offer more options, but because tinted plates are not road legal. Even if sold as "show plates," producing tinted plates that end up on public roads isn't something we're willing to do. Every plate we make is built for the road.
