What the DVLA’s eV948 is, when you get one, why it lasts only 3 working days, and how to use it to order your plates.
What is an eV948?
The eV948 is the DVLA's electronic number plate authorisation certificate. When you put a private registration on a vehicle, or take one off, using the DVLA's online service, you can download one straight away. It authorises a registered supplier to make plates for the registration the vehicle now carries, so you don't have to wait for the new V5C. You don't need one to order: before you assign, your V750 or V778 works, and afterwards the new V5C does once it arrives.
Why it matters
The eV948 lets you order plates for a newly assigned registration straight away, instead of waiting weeks for the new V5C. It is issued by the DVLA and quick for us to verify.
Use it within 3 working days
An eV948 is valid for 3 working days from the date of issue printed on it, and it can only be used once. We have to verify it before it runs out, so send it to us with your proof of identity, such as your driving licence or a recent bill, as soon as you download it. A phone photo of your ID is fine. Uploading both on our document upload page is the fastest route; you can also email them to documents@paramountplates.co.uk. If it expires first, the DVLA's advice is to wait for the new V5C.

How to get an eV948 certificate.

Get the Right to a Registration
Buy a private registration from DVLA Personalised Registrations, at a DVLA auction, or from a dealer or private seller. You will hold it on a V750 certificate of entitlement or a V778 retention document, unless the dealer puts it on your car for you.

Assign It to Your Vehicle Online
Use the DVLA's online service to assign the registration, with the vehicle's V5C and your V750 or V778. The number usually goes on straight away, unless the DVLA needs to inspect the vehicle. The eV948 is only issued through the online service. If you apply by post, get your plates made from the V750 or V778 before you send it off, or wait for the new V5C.

Download Your eV948
Download it at the end of the online application. If you give an email address, the DVLA also emails you a copy. It is valid for 3 working days from the date of issue printed on it, and it can only be used once.

Send It to Us Straight Away
Upload the certificate and your proof of identity, such as a photo of your driving licence or a recent bill, on our document upload page, the fastest route, or email them to documents@paramountplates.co.uk. Send them as soon as you can: we have to verify the eV948 before its 3 working days run out. Your order goes into production once both are verified, and nothing needs posting.
