A border adds a black line around your chosen plate shape. It is printed flat as part of the plate design, giving the outer edge more definition without changing the character finish or the external dimensions of the plate.

The border follows your shape

Choose a Standard rectangle, a Short plate tailored to the registration, or the angled ends of Hex. The border follows that outline. It is an option within each shape, rather than a fourth plate shape or a separate plastic holder.

• Border price: £1 per selected plate, or £2 for both plates.

• Lettering: works with all nine active finishes.
• Shape charges: add £5 per Short plate or £10 per Hex plate if selected.

Choose the front and rear independently

Use the Border tab in the builder to compare plain and bordered edges. A matched pair starts with “Same as front” enabled. Turn it off to add a border to only one side, including when the two plates already have different shapes or lettering styles.

Printed lettering keeps the whole design flat. Gel or acrylic lettering adds its own character depth above the plate face while the surrounding border stays printed. The outline on Outline lettering is a different detail: it is part of each raised character, not the plate border.

With a flag or green flash

Standard and Short plates can combine a border with a national flag or green-flash band. The line is arranged around the selected band and leaves the small plate markings clear. Flags and flashes cost £2 per plate and are not offered on Hex. A green flash is for zero-emission vehicles.

Fitting and manufacture

Adding a border does not make the chosen plate larger. Measure the mounting area against your selected shape and choose suitable fixings. The border is selected before manufacture and arrives on the finished plate. We check your identity and entitlement documents before production; free standard UK delivery is included.
